Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for operating a winder for shaft sinking
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for operating a winder for shaft sinking and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details
   • Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
   • Perform equipment and work area pre-start checks
   • Check written records for outstanding maintenance/inspections and recorded defects and take action
   • Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards
   • Carry out start-up procedures, including checking that area is clear for operations
   • Adhere to emergency procedures
   • Apply dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure control cabin is environmentally and ergonomically sound
2. Conduct shaft sinking using manual winder
   • Communicate with relevant personnel
   • Confirm kibble is ready for operation
   • Initiate the system, follow start-up procedures and operate winder, complying with directions from the person in charge
   • Monitor and manage winder performance using appropriate indicators
   • Adjust speed and movement
   • Operate winder (or winders) for shaft sinking operations
   • Carry out shutdown procedures
3. Carry out winder inspections
   • Isolate and prove isolation of equipment
   • Inspect winder and auxiliary equipment and report faults/defects
   • Prepare winder for routine servicing
4. Conduct end-of-shift
   • Complete all required written documentation
   • Pass on end of shift information verbally or in writing and hand over control to oncoming shift
   • Ensure control room is clean and tidy

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient operation of a winder for shaft sinking, including:

selecting and using the required tools and equipment

conducting equipment and work area pre-start checks

identifying, addressing, recording and reporting defects, hazards and risks and environmental issues

confirm kibble is ready for operation

demonstrates completion of operating a winder for shaft sinking that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing start-up and shutdown procedures

applying dust suppression and extraction methods

energising the system

adjusting speed and movement

monitoring and managing the winder performance using indicators

operating the winder/s for shaft sinking operations

isolating and inspecting winder

confirming, checking and taking action to ensure control cabin is environmentally and ergonomically sound

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in operating a winder for shaft sinking through:

relevant hand tools

the key areas of mining acts and regulations

winder type and systems and operations

shaft configuration and construction

shaft services and installations (pipes, cables, ladders etc)

identification of defects relevant to sinking operations through inspection or observation

trip and fault procedures and abnormal conditions

communication system between sinking operations and winder

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

isolation and permit-to work systems and procedures

shaft ventilation systems

accessing and using in-shaft communications equipment
